Music You Should Check Out!

I was out at a friend's birthday dinner / drinks last night and was treated to much more. We arrived at De Santos around 10:00, just before my friend Holly and her partner Júlía Hermannsdóttir in the duo Feather and Folly began to play. Their set was beautiful. A wonderful blend of quirky lady rock, lyrically similar to Au Revoir Simone, and folk rock with a little Bob Dylan. There is something in the sincerity of the lyrics of young women that is lacking in the lyrics of most young men. Feather and Folly's lyrics are blunt and simple, yet far reaching without pretense or bravado, very vulnerable. You can feel the power of owning that vulnerabilty though. Their appeal is also in their simplicity of means, doing one song with no instruments at all, just the harmonies of their voices.

Ryan McGinley @ Team Gallery

As we were winding down on Thursday, I stuck my head out of the door to get a breath of fresh, spring air and noticed the crowd forming outside of Team Gallery at 83 Grand Street. At first, I thought nothing of it, but in 20 minutes the crowd had grown from 20 or 30 people hanging around to about 200. I then remembered that I had read somewhere that Ryan McGinley was to be having a show this spring, and this must be it.

Time Off, But Now We Are Back On Track

It has been a while since the last post. I personally have been in a weird space. There seemed to be a gloom and doom hanging over those last two weeks of winter chill that seemed we would never shake, dragging us into an nonreturnable hole. However, this last weekend and the sunshine have finally returned and with it the hope of life outside of fantasy again. Here is to looking forward to all the possibilities of this beautiful city in the warmer months of the year. See you guys soon!

Nu Franklets

These guys are flying off the racks like hot cakes. You better come and get them while they last. Otherwise, you might just get left wanting. The Nu Franklets are a going to be the staple of Spring/ Summer, coming in two colors, black and khaki. They are made contemporary by the tapered leg and have a ton of detailing. Come in and check them out!

Rosson Crow's Bowery Boys at Deitch

Rosson Crow's exhibition of her new paintings titled Bowery Boys opened last night. Though the usual party atmosphere of the Deitch following seemed lighter, whether that was due to a dilution from fairs or a growing apprehension of what will come of the legendary downtown seen, the crowd was still full of New York's own talent and was a good time.

The paintings are large scale interior spaces of New York that have been inhabited, "tagged", or transformed by the bad boys of the downtown scene. Painted in a wildly gestural style harkening back to abstract expressionism, the work has a very manly pressence, yet the colors and sensibility seems to be fantastically femenine. This contradiction is what gives the work it's exciting charge.

I highly reccomend seeing this show. As these are the last days for the current incarnation of Deitch, I would say to just go down and see the space which will undoubtedly be a part of our history.

That's right kids. The long awaited return of the hole in the wall restaurant Pies 'N' Thighs is finally back up and running in a new location near the intersection of S 4th and Driggs in Williamsburg.

PULSE NY 2010

This is one of those truly great weekends for living in New York. It is the time of year that all the art fairs convene in the city, showcasing some of the best and worst art for sale today. Not only is PULSE one of the better fairs, but it is one of the better fairs down town. Located at Houston and the West Side Highway. Open to the public Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 12 PM to 8 PM, and Sunday from 12PM to 5PM. This is an experience I would not miss. See you there.

Purple Fashion 13

So, I was seriously questioning my purchase of Purple Fashion yesterday evening as I walked out of the Magazine shop on Bedford. As my funds dwindle, I just felt the guy behind the counter look at me licking his lips, thinking this sucker is going to pay$35.00 for this and in turn pay for my kids meals for a week or my ever expanding drug habit(insert which ever works). In anycase, I got home and was reassured that I had not been reckless. Purple truly is a necessity, and should be an untaxable item like food or clothing. Alright, well thats a little bit rediculous, but whatever. Purple, as Olivier Zahm describes it, is a cross section of what is going on in the comunity in which he lives, and as such it truly feels in a sense timeless, not to be mixed in with trends. Pick it up, and find out what this season has to offer. My first glance favorites are the new installment of the life story of Terry Richardson, and as always the model portraits shot by Innez and Vanoodh.
